Austin ISD public records fees draw access concerns

Austin ISD issued more than $172,000 in estimated public records fees over one year, while requestors paid about $3,100. The invoices come as the district faces questions over closures, boundaries and budget cuts.

Austin ISD sent 80 estimated invoices totaling more than $172,000 for public information requests between June 10, 2025, and June 10, 2026. Only 13 requestors paid any part of those bills, for a combined total of about $3,100.

The charges matter for families, employees and residents trying to understand major district decisions, including school closures, boundary changes and budget reductions. State law allows agencies to charge for producing records, but transparency advocates criticized high estimates and a 20% overhead fee that was added in each reviewed case.
