A state historical marker was unveiled June 4 at Round Rock Cemetery for Barbette, born Vander Clyde Broadway in early 1900s Round Rock. Barbette became known internationally as a drag performer and aerial circus artist, performing in Paris venues including the Moulin Rouge and moving in circles that included artists and cultural figures such as Man Ray, Pablo Picasso and Josephine Baker.

Barbette retired from performing after a 1929 fall and later worked as an artistic director and trainer for circus companies. The marker adds public recognition in her hometown, where local Pride organizers and performers have connected her story to Round Rock's LGBTQ history.
